Lale Duruiz is an artist, industrial engineer and academician living in Istanbul. She is one of the founders of Istanbul Bilgi University and served as the Rector of the University in 2001–2005; where she also became the Founding Dean of the Faculty of Engineering in 2009. Very active, she has served as the Delegate of the Science and Women’s Helsinki Group at the Council of Europe since 2003.
This career has led her to use digital technology with an analytical approach during her art journey. Her art projects gave her opportunity to work intuitively freeing her from academic boundaries, while the combination of the art and science in the same melting pot, gave birth to new perspectives. Her experiments started in the 90’s with modifying Polaroid films during development, using pressure on the emulsion and then adding colors and figures.
For the last ten years, she has been teaching Biomimicry, a science of valuing the nature for what we can learn from. Nature is fascinating; but when combined with art its value becomes majestic. At that point she starts imagining how she might transform it to another esthetic visual piece, to raise awareness of a social or an environmental issues; or just to assist the beauty of that particular moment.
